4711, the World’s First Eau de Cologne
Since its inception more than 225 years ago, the 4711 Original Eau de Cologne has been utilized for its positive effects on the mind, body, and spirit of those who use it. In its early days, one of its most common applications was as a treatment, and it was known as “aqua mirabilis,” which literally translates to “wonder water.” This remedy could be taken orally as well as applied topically. The meticulous selection of components and essential oils of the highest possible quality has always been one of the most distinctive aspects of this product.
This includes the pungent herb rosemary, shown through aromatherapy to possess disinfecting effects. In the formulation of the scented water, the high alcohol level, known to have an effect similar to that of a disinfectant, also contributes to the cleansing effect produced. Therefore, the Cologne Original can still be applied topically today as an elixir that is either invigorating or relaxing.
Since the 18th century, men and women in Germany have been wearing 4711, a fragrance that is considered to be a classic in the country. Many of the people like the smell not just because of the pleasant elements it contains but also because of something more extraordinary, a sense of melancholy for bygone eras. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, any woman who might be considered respectable kept a bottle of 4711 perfume on her vanity. But how exactly does a scent linger for such a significant amount of time?
There are always new fragrance trends, but 4711 has maintained its popularity over the years. We went a little further into the 225-year history of the company to get a better understanding of what all the fuss is about.
Unfortunately, during the American carpet bombing of Cologne in 1943 during the Second World War, the headquarters of 4711 were wiped out. Nearly ninety percent of the city was destroyed, including the neighborhood of Glockengasse, which was home to the company’s headquarters.
The manufacturing plant located outside of the city and where the products were created was also almost completely destroyed. However, despite the destruction of its store, the corporation did not simply ignore its hundreds of years of history. In the 1950s, the company built a fresh new manufacturing plant in addition to the “Blue and Gold Building,” which was situated directly across from the Cologne Cathedral.
Since the turn of the 21st century, 4711 has adopted a product development strategy that is more theoretical and artistic. For example, in 2009, 4711 introduced six new fragrances that were grouped together as part of a series called Acqua Colonia. Each of the six is centered on natural aromas that evoke the user’s various mental and emotional responses.
What Makes 4711 Stand Out from the Rest?
It has been more than two centuries since the first formulation of eau de Cologne was created; there must be a mystery behind what has kept customers coming back for so many decades. This success is attributed to the high-quality ingredients and essential oils that are used by the business. The top note is crisp and clean, and it immediately draws attention to itself; you can’t help but notice it from the very first spray or splash you give it. Each component, including the aromas, contributes to the overall effect.
